A key element of SDYS’ Community Programs is documenting evidence of the benefit of music education. Several studies are underway to track the social and academic achievements of Opus musicians to compare with students who are not participating. SDYS is collaborating on a study with Longy School of Music at Bard College, Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Wolf Brown. Closer to home, SDYS has partnered with the University of California at San Diego’s Center for Human Development‘s SIMPHONY Study on a five-year study to determine how musical training influences a child’s brain and development of skills like language and attention. SDYS is also a advisor and partner of STEAMConnect who provide a forum for community collaboration to promote the STE+aM movement.
As more scientific data becomes available, SDYS and other music education advocates will be further empowered to work for the restoration of music in schools so that our goal of “making music education accessible and affordable for all” is attained.
